I think one of the first lessons with them (as with all kids being introduced to Daily 5) would be the "3 Ways to Read a Book". This will build the selection of books they can read during read to self. Along with this, I think the importance of your read-alouds is so important. This is where the kiddos are going to hear great modeling of oral language and help them with the understanding of how the language works in written form, as well.
One thing that I think is hard for all of us is to take the time for Read to Self as the cornerstone to Daily 5. Make sure they have enough stamina there before moving on to Work on Writing.
