Is there a relation between the Units of study and the Daily 5?

I have working with the Daily 5 structure as well as the CAFE method in my grade 2 class (FLS) this year. It is going very well. However, when I am conferring with students on writing strategies, I get a bit confused. I do not feel that I am always giving them the right tools to succeed as independent authors. I have been exploring the Units of Study by Lisa Caulkins. I also saw that her name was mentioned in one of your publication (typical guest teacher schedule). I feel that both approaches have similarities. Could you help me understand this better?

The Sisters always talk about how they have a separate Writer's Workshop in addition to their D5/CAFE time, and they often refer to Lucy Caulkin's work. If you read Lucy'a writing about her workshop, you can see that it definitely fits in with the philosophy of the Sisters. I think you are spot on in seeing the connections between the two.

BTW, I have just recently been introduced to Lucy's new Units of Study for Teaching Reading, and again I see all the correlations between her work and the work of Joan and Gail.
